There's no doubt Cinco de Mayo is a fun holiday to celebrate today, but what's the story behind it? Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo on May 5, 1982, the day that the Mexican Army defeated the French in the Battle of Puebla. Market Square is the country's largest Mexican market. These shops and vibrant surroundings are the perfect place to start your day. Known affectionately as El Mercado, it hosts over 100 shops and stalls owned by locals. Throughout the Weekend, San Antonio Market Square celebrates Cinco de Mayo with live bands, folklorico dancers, authentic mariachi music, artisan stalls, and more. Attendance is free for everyone.

Mi Tierra is a must-see when visiting Historic Market Square. Tex-Mex food and authentic mariachi music are served at Mi Tierra (including breakfast all day, no reservation required!). Then, head to the panaderia on site to enjoy some delicious pan dulce.
