SAFARI CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH
In honor of Black History Month, San Antonio celebrates and honors its Black heritage. The Civil Rights Movement, as well as modern achievements, are all part of the long history of contributions made by Black Americans to our city and nation.
All year round, San Antonio celebrates Black Heritage. But but we have some awesome events happening this month, including art exhibitions, film screenings, and tours. There there are plenty of ways to learn about Black history and culture in the Alamo City.
San Antonio has several great ways to celebrate Black History:

For DreamWeek, Charles Floyd conducts a celebration of MLK
It will be held on January 27th, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

This year's DreamWeek features A Celebration of MLK, conducted by Charles Floyd and featuring bass-baritone Timothy Jones. An homage to Dr. Martin Luther King's life and legacy, featuring the Philharmonic.

Write in the Wild and Art in the Wild at DreamWeek
The event will take place on January 29th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

For Art in the Wild & Write in the Wild, San Antonio Poet Laureate Andrea Vocab Sanderson will guide audiences to commune with nature in the McNutt Sculpture Garden in San Antonio. Working with clay, watercolor painting, or sketching will be the main focus of your class. A Life in the Wild exhibit will follow afterward.
An Alamo City Black History Walk on the River
When: February 9th, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Virtual Event
The Alamo City's Black History can be experienced anywhere! During this virtual screening, the Walk on the River documentary about Black life in San Antonio will be showcased. Religious themes, education, politics, social organizations, and community involvement feature prominently.

Black Restaurant Week San Antonio celebrates its 5th anniversary by spotlighting Black-owned restaurants, food trucks, and culinary professionals all over the Alamo City over eight days. Get ready for the Tastiest Week in San Antonio! Enjoy delicious food and wine tastings! Whether you're craving Jamaican, Nigerian, Soul Food, BBQ, burgers, or more, there's a restaurant that's right for you!

While their highly acclaimed Black History River Cruise is already sold out for the month of February, SAAACAM still has a number of great events to mark Black History Month. IKEA Live Oak and SAAACAM team up for the grand opening of the Black Resistance exhibit on February 13th. Although the event is free, registration is required for breakfast. Additionally, SAAACAM welcomes all to the Green Book Historical Marker unveiling on February 22nd from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Immerse yourself in history as you travel around San Antonio for the unveiling of the historic markers providing context to safe places for Negro Motorists during the Jim Crow era. It is free to attend, but you must register.

Through the work of local Black artists, Between Yesterday and Tomorrow: Perspectives from Black Contemporary Artists of San Antonio gives visitors a chance to learn about the cultural and life experiences of local creative people. Using drawing, painting, photography, mixed media, digital media, assemblage, sculpture, and quilting, 18 artists discuss Black history and identity, family dynamics, social connections, personal human experience, spirituality, and resilience.

Located inside Historic La Villita Arts Village, the San Antonio African American Community Archive & Museum San Antonio, affectionately called SAAACAM (Say-Cam), is a valuable resource for African-American history. The SAAACAM is responsible for many educational events that promote the Black community in the city. Learn about San Antonio's Black History by cruising along the River Walk on a Black History River Cruise. They also host free film screenings of some of the best Black history movies. Besides visiting their actual location, you can also see artifacts, timelines, and more!

San Pedro Creek Culture Park combines public art with architectural design and historic preservation. Visit historic San Antonio and discover treasures like the cornerstone of the St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church dating back to 1875, which was discovered by an archeological dig.
