THE MLK MARCH 2023 MLK FESTIVAL AND DREAMWEEK IN SAN ANTONIO
Archive & Museum for African American Community in San Antonio
As a diverse city, San Antonio is proud to celebrate our community often. Join us in celebrating our Black community in January at some of our biggest events. Black heritage and contributions to San Antonio are celebrated during MLK March and DreamWeek. The following events will take place in January and we hope you will be able to attend:
MLK MARCH
Alamo City is one of the largest cities to hold a MLK march. Each January, the MLK March honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the country's most well-known civil rights leaders. As part of its annual planning process, the city's MLK Commission solicits ideas from the community by asking for ideas on a theme for the march. Participants are welcome to make signs in support of this theme and build their attendance around it. Throughout the year, the theme will be Together, we can be THE dream.
A COVID-19 pandemic may have upset past years' plans, but historically, the MLK march attracts over 300000 participants from all over the country. Our celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day takes place in the Alamo City.
DREAMWEEK
Whatever your interest, DreamWeek in San Antonio has something for you. The DreamWeek is meant to advance and build on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King's most iconic speeches. The 11th annual DreamWeek event will take place throughout San Antonio from January 16-28 and will be an almost two-week long series of events. Originally held in San Antonio, DreamWeek has spread over many countries and has become an event that is shared and streamed internationally. It is expected that over 200 events will take place at over 50 locations throughout the city in order to create conversation around the challenges minority communities face today.
INTERACTIONS OF FOOD, RACISM, HEALTH & CULTURE AT THE TABLE
Is food an important part of culture? Immeasurably significant. In this discussion, Rockie Gilford, Nina Carr, and Dr. Jasmine Harris explore the intersection of food, racism, health, and culture with Rockie Gilford, Nina Carr, and Dr. Jasmine Harris. Free and open to the public, this event is part of Black Restaurant San Antonio.
Black History Day Party & Boat Tour at DREANWEEK
During the tour, you'll enjoy light appetizers and an educational overview of the downtown San Antonio area. DreamWeek Black History Day Party & Boat Tour offers that and more. Here in Texas, Black Americans have a rich history and have had a great impact on the city that we know today. Please purchase tickets in advance since the tour begins promptly at 11:30am!
THE DREAMWEEK GALLERY TALK: PIERRE DAURAS GOOD HENRY (1947) REPRESENTATION OF ME AND IDENTITY
Pierre Daura created a series of portraits of colleagues at the college where he taught during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The subjects of these portraits were Black, which led to his employer rejecting them. With this exhibition, curator Regina Palm offers visitors a glimpse into the history and symbolism of Pierre Dauras' Good Henry sculpture.
IN THE QUILT: BEHIND THE SCENE MUSICAL BRIDGES AROUND THE OPENING OF A WORLD ART GALLERY
In this behind-the-scenes look at the cast, crew, musicians, and production process of The Quilt: A Living History of African American Music, Musical Bridges Around the World invites you into the world of musicians and filmmakers like you. A collection of graphics from the film is included in the exhibition, beautifully designed by Coral Diaz and Noelle Artigue. By appointment, this exhibition will be on view from January 21 to March 31, 2023. The works can be purchased online at mbaw.org / art or by scheduling a meeting.
DREAMWEEK: PASSION WITH PURPOSE
DreamWeek: Passion with Purpose is taking place at Legacy Park this weekend. Pinkertons BBQ, craft beer, art galleries, and live entertainment are a few of the highlights. Keep an eye out for a community-created artist display depicting ways for San Antonio to create positive change.

CELEBRATING BLACK HERITAGE YEAR ROUND
Don't have time to attend the MLK March or DreamWeek? It's always a good time to explore our city's Black heritage. If you head over to the San Antonio African American Community Archive & San Antonio Museum (SAAACAM) in Historic La Villita Village, you'll find a digital archive of African American history and contributions. In addition to its regular river cruises, SAAACAM occasionally hosts Black History River Cruises, which feature an hour-long river barge tour through San Antonio's heart. The host will share stories about black history in San Antonio.
